San Francisco, Calif., — K9nMe, a new nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting dog parents nationwide, proudly announces its official launch alongside the release of the inaugural Dog Care Index (DCI), the first comprehensive analysis of the true costs of dog ownership in the United States.

K9nMe was born from a simple yet powerful insight: while dogs are beloved family members, many pet parents feel unprepared for the responsibilities of dog ownership. According to a 2024 npj Mental Health Research study, nearly 40% of new dog owners report feeling overwhelmed, especially around training, healthcare, and behavioral challenges. “Our mission is to ensure no dog parent ever feels alone,” said Theresa Martinez, Board Chair and President of K9nMe. “We’re combining community, compassion, and data to help dog families thrive—because informed, supported pet parents raise happier, healthier dogs.”

The Dog Care Index: Understanding the True Cost of Dog Ownership

DCI reveals eye-opening findings about pet care expenses from 2020 to 2025:

  • The average annual cost of caring for a large dog (99+ lbs) is approximately $4,500—nearly double that of a small dog
  • Health-related expenses like vet visits, medications, and insurance represent up to 50% of annual costs
  • Dog care costs have risen 27% since 2020, with food, boarding, and pet services driving the increase

“Our goal is to transform the way dog parents approach ownership by equipping them with data and community support,” added Martinez. “By understanding costs upfront and planning accordingly, families can reduce the heartbreaking waves of surrender and ensure every dog has a loving, secure home.”

Building a Community of Support

To celebrate its launch, K9nMe will host its first community event, the Pawtner Walk, on June 7, inviting dog parents and their furry companions to gather, connect, and build a stronger, more supported pet parent community.

The organization addresses critical needs in pet ownership:

  • Nearly 3.1 million dogs enter shelters annually in the United States alone
  • Housing insecurity, unexpected medical expenses, inflation, and behavioral issues contribute significantly to dog surrenders
  • Access to local support networks doubles the likelihood of families keeping their pets long-term

“Dog parents deserve a village. K9nMe is here to be that village—offering tools, knowledge, and connection,” said Martinez. “Together, we can reduce surrenders, improve lives, and keep more dogs in loving homes.”
